The current website launches two concert programmes initiated by baritone Mattijs van de Woerd, pianist Shuann Chai and composer René Samson. The leading theme of both these programmes is the life and work of the British composer/poet Ivor Gurney (1890 – 1937). In spite of all the tragedy in his life - his mental illness, the trenches of the First World War - his creative legacy is a staggering output of poems and compositions, many of which have not even been published to this day. Apart from a sampling of Gurney's songs, both programmes also contain a newly composed mini opera by Dutch composer René Samson about Gurney’s life, based on Gurney's poems and fragments of letters written during his involuntary incarceration in the mental asylum where he finally and miserably died.
One of the concert programmes is based on the First World War, the other on Gurney's irrepressible wanderlust. The former programme highlights the work of several other poets and composers who fought in that terrible war and whose lives were destroyed by it.
